How to make a paper woven basket

This is a fun activity to do with your kids! The strength of this basket depends on the thickness of the paper used, and how strong the joins are, but don’t obsess too much with how practical the final product is. Just enjoy making it, and let the Easter Bunny put a couple of small, light gifts in it on Easter morning!

You will need:

  • Colored paper (the bigger the paper, the bigger the basket!)
  • Scissors
  • Glue and/or sticky tape

Here’s what you do:

  1. Woven Basket Step 1 Cut out 8 strips of colored paper.
  2. Woven Basket Step 2Arrange into a ‘star’ pattern and glue in place.
  3. Woven Basket Step 3Cut out a circle (or use a paper plate) and stick it onto the center.
  4. Woven Basket Step 4Fold the excess strips upwards to start building the sides of the basket.
  5. Woven Basket Step 5Get a narrower strip of colored paper, and stick one end to the base of one of the sides. Weave it in and out until you get back to the start, and glue it in place. Trim any excess.
  6. Woven Basket Step 6Repeat with another strip, this time starting from the next side strip.
  7. Woven Basket Step 7Keep alternating until you nearly reach the top. Then fold the excess sides into the basket and stick down to form a rim.

Woven Basket, completed!

Well done! There’s your finished basket ready for filling!
